Kiyomizu-Dera Temple + Higashiyama Street Food and Shopping Tour in Kyoto, Japan

While in Kyoto, Japan we went on a tour of Kiyomizu-Dera which is one of the top things to do while in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-Dera (清水寺, Kiyomizudera) means Pure Water Temple in Japanese and is one of the most popular temples in all of Japan. Of course, being located in Kyoto, one Japan's historical capitals, helps its cause. Kyoto is ladled with historical buildings and temples like Kiyomizu-dera. Unlike Tokyo, which was bombed during WW2, most of the city still retains its traditional Japanese flair. We also explored the neighbouring Higashiyama neighbourhood, which is a food and shopping wonder! Kiyomizu-Dera was founded in either 778 or 780 and is named after the Otowa Waterfall. At first, the temple was associated with the Hosso sect of Buddhism until 1965 when it formed its very own Kita Hosso sect. One of the iconic images of the temple is that of its wooden stage that protrudes from its main hall. It is said that people used to attempt the jump down below and those who survived the fall were then blessed with good luck. I can see people surviving the fall, but I'm less than certain that the probably permanent consequences were worth any of the good luck gained. But never-mind my skepticism, moving on... In the back of the Kiyomizu-dera temples lies the Jishu shrine, dedicated to love. Having relationship trouble? This might be the spot to cure your illness. At the bottom of the Kiyomizu-dera temple like the Otowa Waterfall which is divided in 3 separate streams. Visitors are free to cleanse themselves with the pure water from the waterfall, which is a typical Japanese tradition even at Shinto shrines.
